This week’s episode is the first in a new series, Words in Progress, where we speak with writers and writing professionals about a specific aspect of writing craft. Today’s inaugural episode with Nina Sadowsky focuses on Themes in our writing.

Nina Sadowsky has a new book out – Convince Me – and betrayal is a big theme in the book. She explains, “…By examining where people are broken and damaged, I can figure out how we heal.”

Here is some of what else Nina has to say…

On the big picture:

“A lot of my philosophies about writing are about marrying that sense of what is universal in terms of craft to that authentic original singular voice.”

On What is writing?

“For me, writing is always the answers to a series of questions that I’m posing to myself. And then I rely on theme, character, and craft to answer those questions.”

On universal truths:

“As a writer, one of the things I’m always interested in is that there is no one absolute truth.”

On what writers need to ask themselves:

“Did every scene advance these four things: plot, story, character, and theme.”

Nina gave us so much to think about and she gave an exercise we can do ourselves.  She asks writers to do the following exercise:
A one paragraph statement of theme(s) about your work + one scene that you think is representative of those themes as explored through your character(s).

And if that wasn’t enough she offered  a critique on their exercise on theme +

This week’s Corks and Conversation with Richard Meredith was great fun and insightful!

Richard, Christie, and Cathi all shared a California Petite Syrah, each from a different label.  Richard’s wine had his own book cover on the label.  After this pandemic, if he has any bottles left, Christie and Cathi will have to take a trip to California to give it a try!

Richard Meredith’s new book, The Crow’s Nest, is a high-stakes thriller about two men seeking their own justice against brutal cartel.  After college, Richard worked as a marine scientist and wildlife biologist for the federal government and the private sector. That history colors his novels. He describes how a tuna seiner works, but explained that his knowledge pertaining to the Cartel in his novel came from research, not first hand knowledge during his time on the open waters.

Here’s what Richard had to say on writing  …

“It’s the hardest thing to start, the easiest thing to quit, but so much fun in between.”

Richard also shares his thoughts on working with a small publishing house, Moonshine Cove Publishing, for his second novel, as well as his new quarantine German Shepherd puppy.

This week’s Corks and Conversation with Danny Gardner was a wild and fun ride!

Danny Gardner’s new book, Ace Boon Coon, is the second in his Elliot Caprice series which takes place in 1950’s Illinois.

Danny and Christie, from California and Florida, shared a Sancerre; Danny enjoyed a Jean-Jacque Auchère Sancerre, while Christie tried a Charles Debourge Sancerre.  Cathi was more limited in her wine shopping options. To that, Danny joked:

“You know what South Dakota has? It has potential, that’s what it has. It’s going to have everything one day.”

In the conflicts that Elliot Caprice faces, Danny discussed how he wanted to show that black people go through the same everyday struggles in addition to the more publicized mistreatment and racism.

The story is set in the 1950’s, but feels modern. Danny talks about how there are patterns that continue across time and new stories can show these patterns without needing to be stereotypical or a remade classic.

Danny also shares his take on starting his own publishing house, Bronzeville Books.

This week’s, Corks and Conversation with Joseph Reid was a great way to kick off our Season Three …

Joseph Reid gave us so much insight into what it’s like to write novels that draw on our personal experiences, how to build complex characters, and how to write on deadlines while working full time. His new book, Departure, is the third in his Seth Walker series that follows the harrowing adventures of a federal air marshal.

We enjoyed a Starborough Sauvignon Blanc, the drink of choice for a difficult airline passenger on the first page of the book. After that there was no time for wine drinking in this book. We are talking a high-paced thrill ride!

We also realized that we had some things in common with Joe … he started out as a marine biologist (like Christie) and then moved on to the law (like Cathi) and is now a writer (aren’t we all?). We are certainly inspired by Joe to reach the next step as published author!

Here’s some of what Joseph Reid had to say:

On waking early to write …

“A lot of people get up early to exercise or meditate or something; it is very much my therapy- It’s what I do to relax and what I do for fun and what I do for myself.”

On getting his book on Late Night with Seth Myers …

“Honestly, it was just complete sheer blind luck”

This week’s, New Beginnings and a Birthday Surprise, kicked off Season Three with all kinds of big reveals…

New to this season you can also watch us do our podcast on our Game of Books YouTube channel.

And this week you will want to watch to see Cathi’s reaction to her birthday surprise. Christie surprised her with a visit from one of her favorite authors, Hank Phillippi Ryan! Happy Birthday, Cathi!

Hank will rejoin us for our first GOB Club episode in October. Her book, The First To Lie, is our first book club book. It’s a great psychological thriller so read it so you can join the discussion on our podcast. We are picking up to six lucky listeners to join us on the podcast! Enter here for your chance for a spot on the show!

We will also keep an eye on Christie’s basil plants as she attempts to follow the tips in our Basil Collection. The recipes in the collection are also great, and on this episode we were drinking two of them. Frosé anyone?

We also discussed some of our quarantine reads!

On The Order by Daniel Silva …

“I love the settings and his description of the settings. Can’t travel? You might as well just read a Daniel Silva novel” – Cathi

On Where The Crawdads Sing by Delia Owens …

“The picture she painted with her words was just so vivid and real that you just want to read it because of that.” – Christie

Seems all good things must come to an end. That is certainly the case with our Killer Season Two! Just listen to this recap to hear all the good, dare I say great, things we experienced!

First off, we shared some wine. This week’s feature was an award-winning wine, just like our authors. McGuigan The Plan Shiraz from Australia hit the spot. We especially liked the title since we all need a really good plan for the future right now. Here’s hoping we can all come together on this!

We chatted about what some of our Corks and Conversation authors from Season Two are up to during this crazy time of staying home and staying safe. Suffice it to say, they are keeping busy. If you want to check out for yourself, here are the links to the authors in the order we talked about on the episode: Nina SadowskyAl PessinLisa Unger,   J.T. EllisonElena TaylorJess LoureyTaylor StevensHank Phillippe Ryan,  and  Catriona McPherson.

Wow, what a great season! And now we are making a plan for our third season! During our break, look for news on contests and surprise episodes. You can do this by signing up for our newsletter and following us on social media. We’d love to hear your ideas for next season. Which books should we cover and which authors should we chat with? Let us know!

Hopefully things will get better soon and we will emerge to a new normal. Stay safe and healthy!

Episode 30 of our Killer Season 2 is a fun respite from everything Covid-19.

It was so nice to put aside our everyday anxiety during these strange times and simply sip wine and talk about a good book!  And, rest assured Mysterious Foodies out there, All We Buried by Elena Taylor is a suspenseful and addictive read! We paired it with DaVinci Chianti and pizza delivery which we think works well with virtual book clubs. Cathi chose the wine from her limited selection in her town in South Dakota, where the liquor store just reopened for pick up orders. Fortunately we both enjoyed it!

Among our scattered conversation (Anyone else finding it hard to focus right now?), we talked about the great characters from the book and how we would like to visit Washington State. We also talked about how  every character needs to have an objective and an obstacle in every scene. This is something Elena Taylor talked about on our podcast last week and we wanted to expand on it.

We wrapped up with talking about the TV shows we’ve been catching up on while staying home.  We hope that you all are finding ways to fill your time while staying safe and healthy!

And of course, if you haven’t listened already, last week’s Corks and Conversation with Elena Taylor was a wonderful interview to end our season.  Next week you can join us for our Killer Season Two Finale!

This week’s Corks and Conversation with Elena Taylor is one of the most insightful author interviews this season …

Elena Taylor was so fun to talk to that we could have gone on for hours! We all had different wines because of our limited shopping ability during this pandemic. Elena sipped a local wine from Isenhower Cellars in Walla Walla, Washington. This wine, called a Mourvèdre, goes great with the red velvet cake she had to celebrate her book launch.  We wished we could have been there it sounded so yummy. We did enjoy our wines, Big Six Zinfandel and Dreaming Tree Cabernet, but sadly didn’t have the cake to go along.

This episode was filled with so much information for writers and readers that we couldn’t cut a minute of it! Before becoming a novelist, Elena worked many years in the theater and is an accomplished playwright. She also has multiple degrees, and works as a developmental editor for Allegory Editing. Needless to say, she knows her stuff and here is just some of what Elena shared with us.

On writing during this anxiety filled Covid-19 time …

“One of my tricks is; I print stuff out, and I find that I’m more able to focus on a hard paper copy than I am on a computer screen”

On getting editing feedback …

“Honor the mull … I think the biggest mistake that writers make when they get feedback, is they immediately start doing everything they’ve been told.”

And we also had fun hearing about all her connections to nature and animals in real life and on the pages of her books. You can tell by her picture that horses are a love of hers. And we found out they show up in unexpected ways in many areas of her writing career.

Elena Taylor’s most recent release, All We Buried, just came out this week and we loved it! It is a gripping mystery about memory and the dark secrets we can’t leave behind. You really should get a copy in whatever format you are using right now.

Then listen to next week’s episode where we discuss the book (no spoilers). We pair it with food and wine and give you ideas for your virtual book club.  Subscribe to Game of Books so you don’t miss this episode!

Episode 28 of our Killer Season 2 came out a little late, but hopefully you will find it worth the wait!

We paired Al Pessin‘s debut thriller is Sandblast with Imagery Pinot Noir and a cheese fondue.

Turns out that Christie hasn’t ever made cheese fondue but Cathi is an expert with no less than four fondue pots! So book club will be at her house and she will make a yummy recipe courtesy of Pinch of Yum.

We highly recommend Sandblast for all of you who love thrillers along the lines of Tom Clancy or Daniel Silva. Al may be a debut author but we are expecting him to graduate to a best-selling author! This page-turner is action-packed. Al Pessin has the background to authentically describe the inner workings of the Pentagon and the terrorists in Afghanistan. And we just loved the humanity of his main characters, Bridget Davenport (how’s that for a good name?) and undercover Lieutenant Faraz Abdallah. And guess what? It is the first in a series so you will be able to keep following these interesting characters in books to come.

As all of you, we’ve been dealing with the stress of this pandemic as well as the issues of being home all the time. In more of our crazy small world coincidences, we have faucets leaking in both South Dakota and Florida! And we are dealing with keeping our writing mojo going. So it was really nice to have a great book to read and talk about over a glass of wine. Hope you join us for the fun!

And if you haven’t yet, listen to our last episode where we talk to author Al Pessin.
