This week’s Corks & Conversation was with Frank Zafiro, a prolific crime writer, podcaster, and former law enforcement …

We had a great time talking with Frank about so many different things! We also shared one of his and his wife’s favorite wines, Erath Pinot Noir. His recently published book, Code Fouris the final book in the Charlie 316 series. You will want to get them all … page-turning crime reads!

Here’s a little of what Frank had to say:

On his productivity…

“If it’s something that you’re driven to do, if it’s something that it’s important to you, whatever that is, then you make the time for it, you just do. Finding the balance is the tough part between the job, and family, and then your passion.”

On the challenges facing law enforcement and writing about those challenges …

“Police officers are required to have a lot of different skills, and there are less people to hire who have those skills as well as wanting to do the job when those skills can earn a lot more money on the private market without as much responsibility. The level of public scrutiny is correct and should be there because they serve the public so transparency and the public having a say is important.”

On his podcast, Wrong Place, Write Crime …

“I thought, I could be the host that gets a guest on the show, and it’s the kind of show that you’re driving your car late at night on a long stretch of lonely highway with two hours left to go and you click onto some FM dial and you come across “oh, I know that guy; he wrote such and such.” And then you start listening and they talk about the work and the craft but then maybe they talk about the best hamburger or ‘what’s the meaning of life,’ and then they come back around to the work.”

In our latest GOB Club episode, we were joined by listeners Amber and Gordon, along with Author David Albertyn for a great conversation about his debut novel, UNDERCARD.  You can listen right here or if you want to see everyone’s beautiful faces then watch us on YouTube!

We chose Beringer Bros. Bourbon Barrel Aged Cabernet Sauvignon and BBQ Sliders (easy recipe by Kim’s Cravings) to pair with this action, packed novel.

David zoomed in from Canada to answer questions from listeners Amber in North Carolina and Gordon in Florida. Add in Cathi in South Dakota and Christie in south Florida and we covered a lot of territory. Here is some of what David Albertyn had to say …

On the title of his novel:

Undercard is the name for the fight before the main event and turned out to be a perfect choice.

On writing the novel to take place over the course of 24 hours:

David had always enjoyed stories in a tight time frame and wanted to write one. Listener Amber read her copy in the same time frame!

On David’s writing inspirations:

Michael Crichton and Tolkien

Happy Holidays! Cheers!

In this week’s episode we discussed Janelle Brown’s Pretty Things and paired it with Jadot Pinor Noir Bourgogne.

Inspired by the book, we knew comforting Coq au Vin was the perfect accompaniment.  We compared the merits of Ina Garten’s recipe (Cathi’s favorite of all time) versus the one found in the New York Times

First of all, this book was so well written that it was such a pleasure to read. Janelle Brown has a way with words! We aren’t the only ones who think so. Nicole Kidman’s company is adapting it to film.

This book took on the subject of gaslighting which we could talk about all day. I mean, really! But we didn’t go on too long and had a fun conversation.

This week’s Corks & Conversation was with author Stacy Green …

We had such fun talking with Stacy Green about her writing career, her experience in indie publishing and with her new publishing house, and her new thriller, The Girls in the Snow. We all remotely shared a glass of Pinot Grigio, but highlighted the Gemma Di Luna Pinot Grigio.

Here’s a little of what Stacy had to say:

On nearly stopping writing….

Instead, she made a spur of the moment decision to write this story with a protagonist with a really good backstory.

On how she approaches her first draft:

“I’m a routine person in my mind, like I like to know what I’m going to do, and it never really works out.”

On the setting for The Girls in the Snow:

Stillwater, Minnesota is a picturesque, small town so it works well for her readers.

This week’s episode is the second in our new series, Words in Progress, where we speak with writers and writing professionals about a specific aspect of writing craft. Today’s episode with Elena Taylor focuses on Resolution versus the Denouement.

Elena Hartwell Taylor is an author, teacher, and editor and always gives us such great insight! Last season we talked with her on a Corks and Conversation episode and did a book club episode on her most recent novel is All We Buried. The e-book version is on sale for $1.99 all this month!

On this episode, Elena led us on an insightful conversation about the end of a novel. She describes the climax of any story as having three parts: the lead in, the build, and the resolution. Here is some of what she had to say:

On the lead and the build of a Climax…

“The lead in is when the protagonist is facing their greatest obstacles, the stakes are the highest, and their super objective becomes clear.”

“The build, to me, is as we see how that conflict is going to play out.”

On the denouement…

“The denouement is the new world order”

“The denouement is what happens to the character or characters as they learn to live with the resolution.”

In order for us to explore this topic in our own work she gave three exercises for us and our listeners:

  1. Take your climax and identify the three parts.
  2. Identify the big question of your story and see if your resolution answers it.
  3. No matter whether you need it or not, write a denouement.

This week’s Corks & Conversation with Doug Murano was spooky and really fun!

To help set the mood, we shared a glass of Gnarly Head Old Vine Zinfandel, which is made using grapes sourced from gnarled 35-80 year old head trained vines, some of the oldest in California.. Perfect for a horror discussion!

Doug Murano is a horror writer and editor of 5 horror anthologies. His latest is Miscreations: Gods, Monstrosities & Other Horrors, which he co-edited with Michael Bailey.

Here’s a little of what Doug had to say:

His love of the horror genre came from…Finding a copy of Stephen King’s IT at a garage sale and became of obsessed. Who can relate to that?

On why we love horror so much:

“Good horror, in my opinion, derives from empathy. That feeling of ‘don’t go up those stairs,’ ‘don’t do this,’ ‘don’t do that’- the things you want to scream at the characters before they do something irreversible, comes from a place of empathy. And so, I think, if anything the horror community is full of really kind empathetic folks who work through their fears in this safe place.”

His tweet that recently went viral:

“I get tired of “under 40” lists. Show me someone who got their PhD at 60 after losing everything. Give me the 70-year-old debut novelist who writes from a lifetime of love and grief. Give me calloused hands and tender hearts.”

Listen to his response and our thoughts on the number of writers who start writing later in life.

In this week’s episode we went old school with just us, Cathi and Christie!

We discussed Lucy Foley’s The Guest List.  We loved this mystery set on a remote and blustery Irish island. So many twists and turns that we could see why it was one of Reese’s book club picks! Written from multiple perspectives, this thriller has you turning the pages. If you are looking for a discussion worthy book set in a cool environment for you book club you can’t go wrong with The Guest List by Lucy Foley!

We decided to each choose our own red blend and then compare our choices. And guess what? Great minds think alike because we both picked Menage a Trois Silk! This was a yummy wine that we chose because of the name. Both unexpected love triangles and lots of silk were featured in this novel.

Inspired by the book, we decided canapes were the perfect accompaniment.  Here’s our recommendations for a few recipes, in case listeners need a little inspiration:

Cathi suggested easy canape recipes and red velvet cookies from the Preppy Kitchen website.

Christie went a little toward the Irish aspect and chose canapes from an Irish website called the Wonky Spatula and Smoked salmon tea sandwiches from Natasha’s Kitchen.

This week’s, Corks & Conversation with M.E. Browning was both fun and inspiring …

We had such fun talking with M.E. Browning about her career in law enforcement, her transition into writing and the inspiration for her new book, Shadow Ridge. We shared a bottle of Pine Ridge Chenin Blanc Viognier. Luckily, we were each able to find it in our respective locations and enjoyed the light yet complex flavor of this white wine.

Here’s a little of what M.E. (Micki) had to say:

On writing…

“This was actually the first time that I had written multiple points of view and so it was a challenge for me to actually capture that and to be able to reveal character through other character’s perspective”

On Quinn, her gamer character …

“She was fun to write; I was able to unleash my inner snark and it was completely appropriate for her.”

On her favorite beach …

“Most people are going to think I would lean towards anything in the keys because that’s where the Mer Cavallo series was set, and they would be wrong. I love winter beaches.”

This week’s GOB Club: THE FIRST TO LIE with Hank Phillippi Ryan was so fun and a great way to kick off this new series!

We were happy to have three of our listeners – Beth, Teresa, and Judi  – join us as guests on the episode!

We chose Antigal Uno Malbec, Club Sandwiches (recipe from SpendwithPennies.com)  and of course, Chocolate Chip cookies (recipe from HandletheHeat.com).

Author Hank Phillippi Ryan gave us four words to describe her latest book, The First to Lie:

“Betrayal, Motherhood, Obsession, and Revenge”

Our first guest, Beth, had a question about the idea for the novel.  Hank’s inspiration came from events that happened 10 years earlier when she did an undercover investigation to see if a doctor would lie about their medical legal history. Fascinating!

Answering a question from our second guest, Teresa, about developing her characters:

“In that decision making process, their characters are revealed, their personalities are revealed, we decide if we like them based on what they do.”

In response to our third guest, Judi, Hank talked about the relationship between movies and novels:

“I write it to be as cinematic as I possibly can. But the cinema is in your brain, the cinema is not on the screen.”
