Unspeakable Things and AVA Grace Rosé

For Episode 20, we discussed Unspeakable Things, the-hard-to-put-down book by Jessica Lourey. Set in small-town Minnesota, near where Cathi grew up,  the book is inspired by a terrifying true story from the author’s hometown. It’s a heart-pounding novel of suspense where nothing is as quiet—or as safe—as it seems. It’s an intense book, but one we didn’t want to stop discussing.

Perfect for a book club, we had fun pairing the wine and food. Because the book is set in the 1980’s, it seemed only logical to share a bottle of wine inspired by the 80’s favorite White Zinfandel. We chose an inexpensive Ava Grace Rose, after having learned how closely related the two wines are. And inspired by a pivotal buffet scene in the book, we’d serve another 80’s fav – a 7 Layer Salad. REAL HOUSEMOMS has a nice updated recipe (in case yours is still from 1987).

For the Writer’s Perspective, we discussed the difference between Adult and Young Adult Mysteries, especially with the presence of a young narrator. Here is the link to Janice Hardy’s website  who gave a workshop at Sleuthfest a few years ago and help Christie determine she was writing a young adult novel.  Another resource for our discussion was a Writer’s Edit article that sums it up in three points.

Finally, find out what, if anything, Cathi and Christie are doing for Valentine’s Day next week. We know our Corks and Conversation with Jess Lourey will be good entertainment anyway!
