Halloween Horror: Corks & Conversation with Doug Murano

This week’s Corks & Conversation with Doug Murano was spooky and really fun!

To help set the mood, we shared a glass of Gnarly Head Old Vine Zinfandel, which is made using grapes sourced from gnarled 35-80 year old head trained vines, some of the oldest in California.. Perfect for a horror discussion!

Doug Murano is a horror writer and editor of 5 horror anthologies. His latest is Miscreations: Gods, Monstrosities & Other Horrors, which he co-edited with Michael Bailey.

Here’s a little of what Doug had to say:

His love of the horror genre came from…Finding a copy of Stephen King’s IT at a garage sale and became of obsessed. Who can relate to that?

On why we love horror so much:

“Good horror, in my opinion, derives from empathy. That feeling of ‘don’t go up those stairs,’ ‘don’t do this,’ ‘don’t do that’- the things you want to scream at the characters before they do something irreversible, comes from a place of empathy. And so, I think, if anything the horror community is full of really kind empathetic folks who work through their fears in this safe place.”

His tweet that recently went viral:

“I get tired of “under 40” lists. Show me someone who got their PhD at 60 after losing everything. Give me the 70-year-old debut novelist who writes from a lifetime of love and grief. Give me calloused hands and tender hearts.”

Listen to his response and our thoughts on the number of writers who start writing later in life.
