Corks and Conversation with Elena Taylor

This week’s Corks and Conversation with Elena Taylor is one of the most insightful author interviews this season …

Elena Taylor was so fun to talk to that we could have gone on for hours! We all had different wines because of our limited shopping ability during this pandemic. Elena sipped a local wine from Isenhower Cellars in Walla Walla, Washington. This wine, called a Mourvèdre, goes great with the red velvet cake she had to celebrate her book launch.  We wished we could have been there it sounded so yummy. We did enjoy our wines, Big Six Zinfandel and Dreaming Tree Cabernet, but sadly didn’t have the cake to go along.

This episode was filled with so much information for writers and readers that we couldn’t cut a minute of it! Before becoming a novelist, Elena worked many years in the theater and is an accomplished playwright. She also has multiple degrees, and works as a developmental editor for Allegory Editing. Needless to say, she knows her stuff and here is just some of what Elena shared with us.

On writing during this anxiety filled Covid-19 time …

“One of my tricks is; I print stuff out, and I find that I’m more able to focus on a hard paper copy than I am on a computer screen”

On getting editing feedback …

“Honor the mull … I think the biggest mistake that writers make when they get feedback, is they immediately start doing everything they’ve been told.”

And we also had fun hearing about all her connections to nature and animals in real life and on the pages of her books. You can tell by her picture that horses are a love of hers. And we found out they show up in unexpected ways in many areas of her writing career.

Elena Taylor’s most recent release, All We Buried, just came out this week and we loved it! It is a gripping mystery about memory and the dark secrets we can’t leave behind. You really should get a copy in whatever format you are using right now.

Then listen to next week’s episode where we discuss the book (no spoilers). We pair it with food and wine and give you ideas for your virtual book club.  Subscribe to Game of Books so you don’t miss this episode!
