Yes, it’s Thursday. For those of you who are paying attention, this is my second Wednesday update to come out on Thursday. So I decided just to call it like it is this time.

Drafting … that is a new term I’ve discovered for writing on my WIP (work in progress). I love it because it is so easy to say. “I’m drafting.” Often non-writer friends and family ask how it’s going with the writing. We who write know that it is always going. Or it should be. Aside from the non-writing evils … see the next paragraph … we should be either writing something new (drafting) or fixing what we wrote (editing). Now, depending on what stage I’m in, or what is most on my mind (because face it we are often doing both), I will simply answer, “I’m drafting” or “I’m editing.” So much easier than describing all the many chores involved with the writing process.

Deep down, I know they really just want to know when I’m going to get published. Which leads me to another word that I wish I didn’t know … Querying. This process begins once you have drafted, then edited many times until you have the best manuscript you can. The query is a letter that goes out blindly to a literary agent where you describe your book and hope to entice them to want to read some or all of it. Then to fall in love with it enough to represent you. Then they do what you just did to try to get a publisher to buy it. It is a grueling numbers game. The agents are inundated with manuscripts and to be the lucky one they want to represent is often just that, luck.  Sometimes the luck happens early in the process, but most often it is after quite a lot of rejection.

“I love my rejection slips. They show me I try.” – Sylvia Plath

I embrace Sylvia Plath’s quote during this process. One rejection last week, another this week. I’m fortunate that they have all been very generous in their decline to represent. All tell me to keep searching in this subjective field to find the one agent that fits.  So here’s to a little luck the next time I open my inbox!

We had another wonderful talk with Tom Straw for our Game of Books podcast. You must have a listen for his funny and insightful stories. He’s such an accomplished writer, both with his mystery novels and on television. His seven Richard Castle books were best-sellers and his latest book, Buzz Killer, under his own name is a real page-turner!! If you haven’t read it you should! He is also very successful in all areas of the entertainment industry, yet he made the time to share some of his awesome sense of humor with us.  Really nice person and we had tons of fun!

And if you want to get the whole experience, then you should open a bottle of Voga Italia Pinot Grigio while you listen. We can’t say for sure but it may have enhanced our Corks and Conversation #6 episode!

This update comes after a fun but exhausting week. I traveled to Chapel Hill, North Carolina to see my daughter and get my fill of hugs to last until the end of the semester. It was beautiful and spring like … and pollen filled. Thus the word pollenpocalypse was born, thanks to my son. In fact I shared a picture of the beautiful blooms on Instagram so everyone could enjoy minus the sneezes.

I returned to sunny south Florida where the weather was very summer-like, read hot and humid only without the thunderstorms.  Funny, when Cathi and I did our GOB podcast that evening I learned that South Dakota was having thunder snow!! I know, crazy right? Well to most of us it is unheard of and I must say, Cathi seemed a little surprised by it as well. We talked about Brad Park’s book, The Last Act. If you haven’t listened, it’s funny and informative as is the Corks and Conversation episode with Brad himself. Oh and keep checking on Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram for information an upcoming giveaway contest for his book.

Finally, I had a fun but exhausting three days at the Rock the Oceans Tortuga Music Festival on Fort Lauderdale Beach. I went with my son, who kept us on a tight itinerary to see all the best musicians and still we couldn’t catch them all! Really was an awesome event for country music fans with a sprinkling of rock, reggae and hip hop. Too many to name but as an example, one night we saw Joan Jett and the Blackhearts and the next night we saw Maren Morris and Thomas Rhett. So besides a little bit of sunburn on my lips and shoulders, and a lot of sore muscles from all that dancing, I had so much fun being filled with music from so many talented artists!

So now, I’m happily back to the writing groove … until the next adventure lures me away!

On our Game of Books podcast, we had a blast talking with Alexia Gordon for Corks and Conversation #5.  Her fourth mystery in the Gethsemane Brown, an #ownvoices amateur sleuth series – Fatality in F – came out on February  26, 2019 (you have to get it!).   She gave insight into the world of publishing and a friendly Irish ghost … and we shared some laughs along the way.

Because Alexia is a whiskey drinker, we shared a bottle of Apothic Inferno, which is described as a wine with a whiskey soul.  Pour yourself a drink, and take a listen to this week’s podcast!

You can also find other episodes and subscribe right on our website!

Ever have one of those weeks where you are off by a day? That’s me this week.  I spent Monday traveling with family, so it felt nothing like the first day of a work week. I imagine that is the root of my problem.

Yesterday was Wednesday. I know it was Wednesday. I brought my dad to his Wednesday morning appointment. A man in the waiting room even asked me for the date, which I was able to easily give him. More than once I said, “I can’t believe it’s Wednesday!” Apparently this was the truth because this Wednesday Update is coming out on Thursday.

Aside from starting off schedule, I hope that April proves to be the productive writing month I want it to be. In March, Cathi and I had wonderfully inspiring talks with authors for our Game of Books podcast. Last Friday’s Corks and Conversation with Brad Parks was awesome!  If you haven’t listened already, then you should! Fortunately, we have more Corks and Conversations to release throughout April, so we can be reminded of the fun we had recording them. And I can have weekly tips from these successful writers. I’m sure April will have no choice but to live up to my expectations … and maybe even roll over to some of May if my belated writing continues.

Oh Yes We Did … do episodes of our Game of Books podcast with Five award winning and best-selling authors at Sleuthfest 2019 – Alexia Gordon, T. Jefferson Parker, Tom Straw,  Charles Todd, and Elaine Viets!  Star-struck and honored, Cathi and I had no idea how things would go when they agreed.  Excited and nervous, we couldn’t wait to meet them and pick their brains (not literally although we are thriller writers). Now we have five more Corks and Conversations under our belt and we couldn’t be prouder of ourselves. Bonus is the fact that the authors seemed to have fun as well!  We shared many laughs and a few glasses of wine all the while learning more about the writing world. They are so inspirational and entertaining we could have talked to them for hours if they didn’t have other important things to do … like write the next blockbuster mystery!

Oh Yes We Did … pitch our books to several agents and get some really great feedback on our critiques. Plus we attended so many workshops that will hone our writing skills and prepare us for the world of publishing. Sleuthfest is a one of a kind conference when it comes to warmth and camaraderie in the writing community. Which is good because this Florida girl needs all the warmth she can get while in the air conditioning all day. Hotels down here have excellent air conditioning, I’ll give them that.

Oh Yes We Will … continue on this wild road of blogging and podcasting that we’ve started and are having so much fun with! We will also continue writing mysteries and then rewriting and editing until we get them right. Tenacity is something we learned from T Jefferson Parker. That man has grit and the awards to show for it! You’ll have to listen to his upcoming episode of Corks and Conversation to hear all about it.

So while Cathi headed north to South Dakota and I headed south to Fort Lauderdale, we are still only a phone call away … or a podcast away for all those listening and following our journey.

So we had another fun episode of Game of Books! Cathi made it down to Florida … barely … for Sleuthfest from South Dakota which is having another blizzard. Crazy Winter!!

We changed things up a bit and read the same book, Judgment by Joseph Finder!  We both agreed that it was a great read!

Cathi drew from her prosecutor roots to talk about the hard decisions judges have to make. Really present in this book!

I chose a Sancerre wine (LES FRANCHES SANCERRE BY PASCAL JOLIVET) which is above our price point at $27.  But you only live once and since we were together we only had to buy one bottle. The food in the book ranged from power breakfasts to caviar (can be for breakfast, too) to clam bakes!

Must read and next weeks will be one of our Corks and Conversation with a Sleuthfest author! Can’t wait!!

Yesterday was Mardi Gras (aka Fat Tuesday) which is traditionally a day of celebration and debauchery. This is under the guise of a last hurrah before lent, the period of time known for abstinence, leading up to Easter. Over the years, for many it has lost its religious meaning and is just a fun time to party. In my house, as a foodie, it’s a time to eat one of the traditional Cajun recipes that I love to cook … Crawfish or Shrimp Etouffee, Blackened Fish or a yummy Gumbo. I also like to pretend that I’m going to follow the Tuesday night party with six weeks of being a good girl.

So that means that today I’m working hard and staying focused. It may not last six weeks but I’m hoping for at least a couple weeks because I have a busy time ahead with Sleuthfest. Not to mention, after a fun week of family and friends here to celebrate my dad’s 80th birthday, my to do list has grown substantially.

I took Cathi’s advice from last week’s blog and followed her steps to fight the feeling of being overwhelmed. It has been so helpful. Add to that my post Mardi Gras mentality, I’m sure to get everything done! At least until the next must celebrate holiday comes along. Does anyone have a favorite Shephard’s Pie recipe for St. Patrick’s Day?

Cathi and I had a great time on Episode 16 (have a listen), talking about the following:

Buttercream Chardonnay – goes well with cheese and crackers.

Frozen Heat by Richard Castle aka Tom Straw – he’s one of the author faculty at Sleuthfest

Silent City by Alex Segura – yet another of the author faculty at Sleuthfest

Writer’s Perspective: Comparable titles for your manuscript are a necessary evil when pitching to agents and publishers.  We talk about what they are and how to find them. Join the discussion on Facebook or Twitter
